Sublimation Printing Supplies Checklist: Paper, Ink & Blanks for Beginners

Feb 16, 2026

If you’re getting started with sublimation printing, buying a heat press and a printer is only part of the setup. What actually determines whether you can produce consistent, sellable results is whether you have the right supplies.

This checklist focuses on the three essentials beginners need: paper, ink, and blanks—plus a few small extras that save you from common mistakes.

The 3 Essentials You Actually Need

1)Sublimation Paper

Sublimation paper holds the dye before heat activates the transfer. The right paper helps ensure even release and sharper details.

  • Use paper made specifically for sublimation (not photo or copy paper)
  • Look for stable coating and printer compatibility
  • Avoid mixing paper types without adjusting settings

2)Sublimation Ink

Sublimation ink turns into gas under heat and bonds with coated surfaces or polyester fibers.

  • Use true sublimation ink only (don’t mix with regular ink)
  • Print periodically to reduce nozzle clogging
  • Don’t switch inks back and forth in the same printer

3) Sublimation Blanks (Materials)

Not every material works for sublimation—only polyester fabrics and coated items can accept sublimation dye properly. For a deeper breakdown of which materials work and which don’t, check the guide on suitable materials for sublimation heat press.

  • Beginner-friendly blanks: coasters, keychains, metal plates, magnets, poly-blend fabrics
  • Avoid 100% cotton and uncoated wood/metal
